Most Consumers Drive <10 Minutes for Fuel, Groceries, Fast Food

August 23, 2017

More than 90% of purchases take place in brick and mortar locations. And most purchases happen not more than 15 or 20 minutes from home or work.

Data show that consumers in urban markets are not willing to travel very far to make everyday purchases. According to a new study, 92% of consumers in urban markets travel 15 minutes or less to make everyday purchases. Those occurring in closest proximity to consumers include fuel (6 minutes), groceries (8 minutes), fast food (8.4 minutes), gym memberships (9.3 minutes) and casual dining (11.5 minutes).

The study suggests geo-targeting radius distances for marketers in a variety of business categories. However it also empirically confirms the long-held belief that the vast majority of consumer spending happens locally.
